The reading passage presents three reasons to account for the collapse of the short-lived Akkadian Empire established by Sargon, while the speaker thinks otherwise.

To begin with, the reading states that the rebellious conquered populations eventually set the empire apart. According to the lecture, however, the rebel forces in those conquered city-states could by no means fight against the army under the control of the central government, since Sargon had ordered his men to tear down the defense walls of those cities heoccupied.

The author argues that the lasting draught in the northern region of the empire led to the shortage of food and thus the downfall of the state. The professor refutes this argument by pointing out that the country, equipped with sound agricultural technologies, could carry water over long distance and store food for long time, thus coping with possible food problems.

Finally, contrary to the belief in the passage that the worsening trade relations with other countries resulted in the disintegration of the empire, the lecturer contends that the country was able to make contact with new trading partners in realms afar, such as those inIndian continent, which enabled it to have access to new resources.
