題目:Cycling is more environmentally friendly than other forms of transport. Why is it not popular in many places? And how to increase its popularity?
In spite of the fact that riding bicycles is more environmentally-friendly other than any other vehicle, the two-wheeled mode of transport’s popularity began to disappear and are gradually replaced by their fuel-powered competitors. It seems to me that the manpower operating system and uncomfortable riding experience are the two main reasons for this unpopularity, with some suggestions proposed to cope with this predicament.
First of all, the efficiency of cycling is much lower compared with other fuel or electricity-powered vehicles. In other words, bikes are operated by human beings themselves, by which I mean cycling is more physically demanding but the speed of this is not satisfactory. Therefore, for the city commuters, especially those who are living in the metropolitan ones and have to travel a long distance to work on a daily basis, cycling can hardly be seen as a priority means compared with other transportation methods. Apart from the low efficiency, the poor riding experience also cannot be ignored. In most countries of the world, the weather is not that stabilized all year round. Except for the extreme weather such as storm or torrential rain, the daily temperature also brings people challenges while riding, especially during winter and summer.
There are several suggestions to alleviate the situation. First, the introduction of bike-sharing does contribute to the rescue of cycling, which effectively solves the ‘last mile’ problem. For example, In Taipei, people can simply use their smart mobiles to unlock the bike, utilizing them during the last part of their destination where it is unreachable by the public systems and originally has to be arrived by walking. Second, cycling activities can also be organized as a kind of a routine. Although technological advances bring about enormous conveniences to people’s daily life, the lack of exercise has also emerged. Cycling is such a valuable method, which can reduce the risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and several cancers. However, facing the daily mounting pressure, few people would prefer to exercise but rather stay at home. Thus, organizing the cycling activities by the government or certain associations can enhance the popularity of riding bikes and meanwhile enhance the overall health conditions of citizens.
In conclusion, the application of bike-sharing and the prevalence of cycling activities are the two solutions that I came up with.
