The reading material proposes three theories to explain the purpose of the shafts found in the Great Pyramid. However, the lecture believes all of them are problematic and the purpose of these shafts is still unknown.

First, the professor contends that the shafts are not for ventilation, which contradicts the reading material’s first theory. Different from the higher shafts, the shafts coming from the lower chamber could not reach the outside wall and thus couldn’t bring in fresh air. Since the four shafts are similar, they should have the same purpose. But only two can bring in air from the outside, ventilation is probably not the shafts’ purpose.

Second, the lecture disagrees with the star alignment theory put forward by the writer. The association between specific stars and specific gods in the ancient Egypt did not appear until the later years. But the pyramid was built during the earlier years and no such connection during the period was discovered in record. Therefore, religious reasons cannot explain the shafts, either.

Finally, although the professor admits that ancient Egyptians’ belief in the travel of king’s spirit to afterlife, she contends it does not necessarily mean the travel needed an actual shaft. In other pyramids for dead kings, Egyptians built symbolic passageways like false doors for the king’s spirit, which indicates they believe the spirit could easily cross through walls and didn’t need actual opening like shafts. The professor’s argument denies the third theory proposed by the writer.
